Who We Are
The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers was registered as a trade union on the 16th day of August, 1985 under the Trade Unions (Amendment) Act No. 22 of 1978, with certificate No. 0098.
The Union was registered exclusively for Aircraft Pilots, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, and Flight Engineers.
The Association is an amalgamation of Airline Pilots and Flight Engineers Association of Nigeria (APFEAN) and Nigeria Airways Association of Aircraft Engineers and Technicians (NAAAET). The groups came together on April 16, 1984 and constituted an organizing committee for the purpose of holding a delegates conference. It was at this meeting that the name National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers was adopted.
Subsequently, NAAPE successfully held its maiden delegates Conference on 17th & 18th May, 1984 at the Nigeria Airways Sports Club, G.R.A, Ikeja, Lagos (now demised). The Conference elected the first National Executive Council (NEC) – now National Administrative Council (NAC) – with Capt. Ade Olubowale, who worked with Aero Contractors, as the first National President of NAAPE.
The NEC then appointed Comrade Michael Ekugum as the first General Secretary (then called Professional Secretary) in June, 1984.
Thereafter, the NEC set the machinery in motion for the registration of the Association as a trade union which was accomplished in August, 1985.
Being a platform for frontline professionals in aviation, NAAPE is a leading voice for safe flights operation in Nigeria, hence its motto; We Do It Right For Safety. NAAPE is also a strong advocate for the full autonomy and effectiveness of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) being the sector regulator. NAAPE is equally the rallying point for Pilots and Aircraft Maintenance Engineers on professional, ethical and sector growth issues. Above all, NAAPE performs its traditional role of vanguard for the protection and advancement of the workplace rights of its members with passion and dedication.
The present National President is Engr. Abednego Galadima, elected in July, 2018.
NAAPE is an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress of Nigeria (NLC).
